My village used to be known as ‘Kanatha’ and has an assembly of churches. This is one of the mosttourist places of Syria just before the war, it was very popular for French tourists. Kanatha is onebiggest villages in As-Sweida.This place is called ‘el Saray’, which means ‘the palace’, this was built in the 2nd Century A.D.This is the centre of the old village of Kanatha. My grandfathers’ house is very close from here, so Iused to come here often.

This is the Temple of Helios, which means ‘God of theSun’. It was built in the 2nd Century A.D.The Temple of Helios is also located in Kanatha, but faroutside the center.
Here you see “The Temple of Limithimium”, the God-dess of water. This is a kind of mystical place, wherewater flows all year round, which is very exceptional.This was built in the 2nd Century A.D.The Temple of Limithimium is located on the center ofKantatha, which is now called Kanwat.All this region was built with black basalt stone.
I took these photo’s back in 2008. Whenever I look back at these images, I feel nostalgic andvery proud of where I come from.
